Cancun, Quintana Roo — Private companies in Cancun have made significant strides in hiring transgender employees over the past year, according to a local official.
Nohamy Hermida Nieves, head of the Sexual Diversity Office in Benito Juarez, said major retailers like Soriana, Chedraui, and Walmart are increasingly employing transgender workers. She noted that both customers and staff have shown greater acceptance compared to previous years.
Hermida Nieves attributed this progress to awareness campaigns targeting private businesses in recent years. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we are taking small, well-founded steps toward what we want to achieve: inclusion and dignified work for all people,” she said in an interview at City Hall on Friday afternoon.
She acknowledged that broader labor sectors need to improve but emphasized the importance of current advances. The official linked the trend to growing social sensitivity toward the LGBTQ+ community among younger generations and decades of advocacy by LGBTQ+ groups.
“To those coming up, I say keep going, study, be people who can help us continue this fight, to carry on with these causes, because for us it’s important to have doctors, engineers, and beyond… to be in these places where we never thought we’d be,” Hermida Nieves concluded.
