Cancún, Quintana Roo — A transformer explosion sparked a brush fire in Cancún’s Supermanzana 510 neighborhood on Thursday, causing power outages and moments of alarm among residents before firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Chacmol Avenue and 51st Street, where flames spread rapidly through accumulated trash and dry vegetation. Residents reported hearing a loud explosion followed by smoke and then flames emerging from the transformer site, which was located beneath a green area.
The fire quickly reached nearby power lines, causing electricity service to be suspended in the surrounding area. Some neighbors said they could see flames from several meters away along the avenue, raising concerns that the blaze might reach nearby homes.
Affected residents called emergency services through the 911 system, reporting both the explosion and the spreading fire. Firefighters arrived minutes after the report and coordinated efforts to control and extinguish the flames before they could spread to adjacent houses or cause further damage to electrical infrastructure.
Authorities cordoned off the area as a precaution while crews worked to cool the affected zone and prevent possible reignition. No injuries were reported, though material damage and power service disruptions affected multiple homes.
