Drunk Driving Crash on Mexican Highway Kills Two, Injures Two More

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A tragic traffic accident occurred during the early hours of Sunday on Federal Highway 307, in the Tulum-Playa del Carmen section, leaving two people dead, one a French National, and two others injured, along with significant material damage.

According to information provided by authorities who responded to the scene, the incident occurred from south to north, at the retorno for the Sirenis Riviera Maya hotel.

The driver of a Toyota Hilux pickup truck, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and at excessive speed, rear-ended an InDriver platform taxi, a white Nissan Versa, that was providing transportation service from Cancún International Airport.

After the strong impact, the rental vehicle was severely damaged. In the rear part of the Nissan Versa, a person was trapped and lost his life at the scene, while a French woman was seriously injured among the twisted metal of the unit. The taxi driver also suffered various injuries.

Following the impact, the Hilux pickup continued its trajectory out of control, mounted the central median, invaded the opposite lane heading from north to south, and finally left the roadway, knocking down a Federal Electricity Commission pole before entering the brush.

The driver of the pickup truck was injured. Emergency services and private ambulances arrived at the site and managed to transport the three injured people to a hospital: the driver of the pickup truck and two occupants of the taxi. Sadly the French woman was confirmed to have passed by the time they reached the hospital.

The Fire Department carried out rescue operations, locating the lifeless body of a man, apparently a national tourist, who was trapped inside the vehicle. The body was covered with a surgical blanket while awaiting ministerial authorities.

The area was cordoned off while personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office carried out the corresponding procedures and the removal of the body. Elements of the National Guard Roads Division flagged both lanes and carried out expert work to determine responsibilities.
