Cancún, Mexico — Sustainability has become a priority for travelers, with many now opting for destinations and hotels that actively contribute to environmental preservation. A growing awareness of ecological responsibility is reshaping tourism trends in Quintana Roo, according to industry experts.
Rising Demand for Eco-Conscious Accommodations
At least five out of every 10 tourists visiting Quintana Roo arrive with an established environmental consciousness. Approximately 65% of travelers now consider ecological criteria when selecting hotels for their stays, according to a study conducted by Abastur México. This shift has prompted hotels to adopt sustainable practices to meet guest expectations.
Didier Cox, Sustainability Coordinator at Dreams Cancún, stated, "Today’s tourists are choosing hotels in Cancún that have certified environmental protection programs." He emphasized that sustainability has been a growing trend for several years, with travelers increasingly favoring destinations and accommodations that prioritize nature conservation.
Industry Collaboration Through Sustainability Committee
In response to this demand, the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association (AHCPIM) established a Sustainability Committee. The group comprises at least 25 member hotels that share best practices to encourage broader adoption across the industry.
Cox highlighted that participating hotels go beyond internal initiatives, engaging in community efforts such as perimeter cleanups in Cancún’s green spaces, including the Kabah Park and Ombligo Verde. Additionally, these establishments focus on proper waste management and programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Educating Guests on Responsible Tourism
Hotels are also implementing environmental education programs for guests. "While tourists come to relax or have fun, it’s important they also leave with awareness," Cox explained. "We inform them about topics like the carbon footprint generated by tourism and how to behave responsibly on beaches and at archaeological sites."
Educational efforts extend to younger guests as well. Children participating in hotel kids' clubs learn about local wildlife species and the importance of conservation.
Significant Investments in Sustainability
According to Antonio Ortiz, President of AHCPIM’s Sustainability Committee, some hotel chains have invested approximately $2.3 million over the past seven years in sustainability initiatives aimed at supporting biodiversity.
The growing preference for eco-friendly accommodations underscores a broader shift in traveler priorities, positioning Quintana Roo as a leader in sustainable tourism practices.
