Cancún, Quintana Roo — A viral TikTok video has highlighted the stark price difference between airport taxis and public transportation at one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, sparking debate about transportation costs for visitors.
Content creator Ryan Riegner documented his experience at Cancún International Airport, where he asked several taxi services for prices to reach the hotel zone. The first driver quoted him $110 (approximately 1,900 Mexican pesos) for the transfer.
Finding that price too high, Riegner checked with another agency, where the fare dropped to $85 (about 1,500 pesos). Still dissatisfied, he continued searching for alternatives.
He eventually found a much more affordable option: the ADO bus service offered the same route from the airport to Cancún’s hotel zone for just 170 pesos.
The video’s circulation coincided with protests on March 11 by taxi drivers operating at Mexico City International Airport. Those drivers warned they might block airports across the country if authorities don’t address their complaints about what they consider irregular operations by digital platform taxis.
On social media, some users have also pointed to high taxi fares at airports, generating discussion about transportation costs for tourists and travelers at various Mexican destinations.
