Tourist interest in whale sharks has seen a significant rise in Holbox since August. The increase is particularly noticeable following the conclusion of the Eurocup and the Olympic Games, according to the island's mayor, Manuel Escamilla García.
Speaking on International Whale Shark Day, the mayor noted a heightened curiosity from visitors keen to learn about and contribute to the conservation of this species. The surge in interest has proven financially beneficial for local tourism providers, with around 200 businesses reporting a 100 percent increase in sales.
The cost for tourists to view the world's largest fish varies, ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 pesos. European tourists, in particular, have shown the greatest interest in the whale sharks.
To mark International Whale Shark Day, the Lázaro Cárdenas City Council plans to host evening conferences. These events aim to further raise awareness about the importance of protecting this species.
