Three more potential cases of the viral disease, Mpox, have been reported in Cozumel, an island in Quintana Roo. The individuals, already hospitalized, include a 29-year-old man who is currently under medical observation. The man, a native of Cozumel and resident of Playa del Carmen, had previously been hospitalized but requested voluntary discharge to return to his family on the island. However, due to complications, he has remained in isolation since Tuesday, the 27th of this month. It is believed that he contracted the virus from his partner, an Argentinian resident of a neighboring municipality, who was also infected with the virus.
In addition, a mother and her 28-year-old son, both craft vendors, were confirmed to have contracted the disease after presenting symptoms at the local hospital. It is suspected that they were infected through direct contact with tourists visiting the island. Both have been sent home with instructions for necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.
Mpox is a viral disease that can cause a painful rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fever. While most people fully recover, some can experience severe complications, especially if their immune system is already compromised by other diseases.
To prevent the spread of Mpox, it is recommended to avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms, wash hands frequently with soap or disinfectant, refrain from sharing personal items, maintain cleanliness in homes and public spaces, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear. Following medical instructions and respecting isolation protocols in case of diagnosis are also crucial to prevent the spread of the virus. It is believed that these recent infections were contracted from contact with tourists.
