Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Teatro de la Ciudad vibrated with emotion on Wednesday night during Tenorísimo: Pasión Latina, a concert directed by international tenor Rafael Álvarez that brought together prominent local voices for a warm, intimate musical evening.
Álvarez, who paused his life in Prague to reconnect with Cancún audiences, shared the stage with local vocalists in a performance that felt more like a gathering among friends than a formal concert. The event emphasized closeness over the seriousness sometimes associated with opera, creating an open-room atmosphere where artists and the audience shared the experience.
Accompanying Álvarez were sopranos Laura Chuc, Fernanda Martínez, Camila Rosas, and the Candiani sisters; baritones Alfredo Fiori and Reynaldo Márquez, all sensitively guided by pianist Magali Chávez. Each contributed their unique voice and style, building a stage dialogue where the sum of talents became the true protagonist.
The repertoire moved fluidly between classical and contemporary pieces. Works like “O sole mio,” “La donna è mobile,” “O mio babbino caro,” and “O soave fanciulla” coexisted with songs such as “My Way,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Unchained Melody.” The program also included Latin American classics like “La noche que me quieras,” “Besos robados,” “Ojos tapatíos,” and “El Pastor,” which immediately connected with the audience.
Applause followed each interpretation, whether solo, duet, or ensemble. One of the most touching moments came when all voices converged on stage, sharing not just music but a collective energy that enveloped attendees.
Tenorísimo: Pasión Latina was experienced more as an encounter than a concert—a night of talent, closeness, and shared emotions that left a mark on those who witnessed it.
