Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A taxi driver was robbed at gunpoint early Friday morning in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres, disrupting the area’s tranquility and raising safety concerns among transportation workers.

The incident occurred on Rancho Viejo Avenue around dawn when two individuals intercepted the taxi, threatened the driver with a pistol, and stole his marked vehicle numbered 603.

According to authorities, police officers were already pursuing a gray vehicle on the same avenue when they managed to block its path near a Soriana supermarket. At that moment, two suspects jumped out of the car and fled on foot, intercepting the taxi driver to steal his vehicle and escape.

Police detained the driver of the gray vehicle as a suspect. In his statement, he claimed to be a Didi platform operator and said he had also been victimized by the same individuals. However, authorities noted inconsistencies in his account since he wasn’t robbed of his wallet or cell phone.

The detained suspect was transferred to the State Prosecutor’s Office facilities as a presented individual, where his legal status will be determined in the coming hours.

Authorities continue investigating to locate those responsible for the robbery and recover the stolen vehicle.

The incident has alarmed taxi and ride-share drivers in the area, who are demanding increased street security and protection against growing violence they face while performing their jobs.
