Drones Boost Security in Quintana Roo: 95 Flights in a Week

Tulum, Mexico — As part of interagency surveillance and support strategies, the tactical drone unit "Itzamná" conducted a total of 95 flights over the past week, covering 142 kilometers across various zones along Tulum’s coastline. The operations focused on crime prevention, search-and-rescue missions, and bolstering security efforts.

Expanded Surveillance Across Critical Zones

The drone flights extended beyond urban areas to include natural reserves and strategic points along federal highways, such as inspection checkpoints between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, as well as the Tulum–Cobá route. These efforts were coordinated with the Mexican Navy, the National Guard, and state and municipal law enforcement agencies to reinforce surveillance in high-priority areas of the state.

One of the most significant operations involved drone-assisted searches for missing persons in jungle areas and the outskirts of Akumal. The drones worked in tandem with the State Attorney General’s Office, enhancing ground operations by expanding search radii and accelerating response times.

Cross-Municipality Operations Yield Results

In Othón P. Blanco, drones conducted surveillance flights over Calderitas and the Pacto Obrero neighborhood, where authorities maintain heightened vigilance due to reported criminal activity. These operations were carried out with coordinated efforts across federal, state, and local agencies.

Meanwhile, in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, aerial reconnaissance led to the discovery and seizure of a clandestine drug lab, dealing a significant blow to criminal networks in the region. While details regarding the substances or individuals involved remain undisclosed, officials emphasized the effectiveness of drones in detecting illicit activities in hard-to-reach areas.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security highlighted that these results are part of a broader strategy integrating cutting-edge technology to strengthen public safety. "Through actions like these, we reaffirm our commitment to the people of Quintana Roo," the agency stated in a press release.

The "Itzamná" unit continues to serve as a critical tool for territorial monitoring, supporting law enforcement, and responding swiftly to emergencies—aligning with the state’s zero-tolerance policy against impunity.
