Police operation in Playa del Carmen following a shooting incident

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting in Playa del Carmen that left one person dead and another seriously injured. The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office announced the detention of Jesús Abimael “N,” identified as the probable perpetrator of aggravated homicide and attempted homicide.

The incident occurred on April 12 in the In House neighborhood, an irregular settlement in Playa del Carmen. According to officials, armed individuals entered a residence and opened fire on two people.

One victim died after sustaining three gunshot wounds to the head and one to the hand. The other victim suffered serious injuries to the chest and knee and remains hospitalized.

How the Attack Unfolded

Initial investigations indicate that three individuals arrived at the property on two motorcycles and fired at the victims before fleeing the scene, allegedly hiding in nearby vegetation.

Forensic experts recovered spent shell casings of .223 and 9 mm calibers at the location. The 9 mm ammunition is considered for exclusive use by the armed forces.

Arrest and Evidence

Following the attack, prosecutors and municipal public security personnel launched a search operation that led to the suspect’s arrest on Constituyentes Avenue.

At the time of capture, authorities seized a 9 mm firearm with a loaded magazine from the suspect.

During the operation in the In House neighborhood, officials also secured a Vento brand motorcycle without license plates, reported stolen since September 2025, along with three long guns, magazines, and cartridges of various calibers.

Possible Motive

Investigations suggest the alleged perpetrators may be linked to a criminal group involved in drug sales and distribution in Playa del Carmen. Authorities have not ruled out that the attack is related to disputes over control of drug retail in the area.

The suspect and secured evidence have been turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will compile the investigation file and determine the suspect’s legal status within the timeframe established by law.
