Playa del Carmen, QR — Police have arrested a suspect accused of extorting a business in Playa del Carmen under threats of death. According to police, Erick Fabián “N” began demanding 15,000 pesos per month from a travel company in downtown Playa del Carmen. Police stated that he threatened to kill the owner if the payments were not made.
The owner began making the payments in June of this year and continued until the crime was finally reported to the police last week.
"The events for which the detainee is being investigated occurred on June 5, 2025, when the accused, together with other individuals, went to a tourism booth located in the Zazil-Há neighborhood to demand the victim pay 15,000 pesos monthly, under threats to kill him if he did not deliver the money," authorities reported in a statement.
"The victim made several monthly deposits into a bank account during the months of July, August, September, and October of this year. Then, on November 2, Erick Fabián 'N' returned to the establishment to monitor the daily income and report the amount of money collected to the criminal group, warning the victim that they would kill him if he reported the incident to the authorities," the statement continued.
