Summer Vacation Drives Crowds to Cancun’s Street Markets

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The first Sunday of summer vacation brought a noticeable uptick in activity at Cancun’s traditional street markets, known as tianguis, as local families and tourists flocked to browse stalls, sample food, and shop for bargains.

One of the busiest spots was the tianguis in Region 101, considered one of the city’s most important markets. Visitors wandered through aisles offering clothing, footwear, household items, accessories, and a wide variety of food, turning the market into a popular entertainment option during the holiday period.

Paloma Ortega, secretary general of the Tianguis Verdes organization, said that while there has been a slight dip in tourist arrivals compared to other periods, visitors continue to come to the markets to experience a different side of Cancun and buy local products.

Ortega expressed confidence that foot traffic will increase as summer vacation progresses, with more domestic and international visitors arriving, along with Cancun families looking for weekend outings.

The Region 101 tianguis is one of the most frequented in Cancun, drawing upwards of 10,000 people every Sunday. Vendors are hopeful that the summer season will boost sales and strengthen economic activity in the coming weeks.
