Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Riviera Maya and other areas of Quintana Roo will experience a period of intense winds known as a “Surada” from February 19 to 21, civil protection officials warned, a phenomenon that could affect tourists and residents ahead of the 2026 Easter holiday period.
This type of meteorological event is characterized by strong winds arriving from the south or southwest, which cause changes in perceived temperature, increase wave height, and generate potentially dangerous coastal conditions. The Yucatan Peninsula is particularly susceptible due to its geographic location, which allows for the interaction of air currents from both the north and south.
Authorities have recommended taking extra precautions this weekend: staying home unless absolutely necessary, securing roofs and outdoor objects, trimming trees that may pose a risk, and avoiding activities in coastal areas due to waves that could reach up to three meters. Winds could reach speeds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour, according to official reports.
Civil protection officials emphasize that these events can occur at any time of year and that the public should stay informed about changing weather conditions to ensure the safety of all citizens and visitors.
