Viral Surge: Tulum Faces 30% Increase in Stomach Illnesses

Tulum has seen a 30% surge in medical consultations for stomach-related issues, which is being attributed to a viral infection that spreads through close contact or saliva. Gastroenterologist Anahí Fernández López stated that this increase in stomach ailments, particularly noted in November and December, is not linked to the consumption of spoiled food.

The viral infection, which has been present in Mexico since April, manifests symptoms such as watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. These symptoms typically surface between 12 and 48 hours after exposure to the virus. However, in severe cases, the incubation period can extend up to a month.

Fernández López cautioned that antacids, home remedies, or self-medication are not effective and can even be harmful in these cases, as this is a viral, not bacterial, infection. The virus spreads primarily through direct contact with infected individuals or indirectly via contaminated objects, emphasizing the importance of rigorous personal hygiene measures.

To minimize the risk of infection, experts recommend:

• Regular hand washing with soap and water.
• Wearing masks and using antibacterial gel, particularly in crowded areas.
• Avoiding self-medication or home remedies such as teas.
• Eating light foods and steering clear of dairy, spicy, and irritating foods.
• Staying hydrated with water and oral rehydration salts.

Fernández López stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms persist. She said, "Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent serious complications, especially in vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, or those with pre-existing conditions." The surge in cases has raised concerns among specialists, who underscore the importance of preventative measures and health education in curbing the spread of this virus in the region.
