Two detained suspects in Puerto Morelos after armed confrontation

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo – The State Prosecutor’s Office reported the capture of two men identified as Miguel Ángel N and Benancio N, alleged members of a criminal group, after a shootout that occurred on Thursday afternoon in the municipality of Puerto Morelos. The detainees are charged with crimes against public health, carrying firearms for exclusive use by the Army, and attempted homicide.

The incident occurred while investigative agents were traveling on the federal highway Cancún-Playa del Carmen, near Playa Paraíso.

At that point, the officers detected three individuals, who upon noticing the presence of the official vehicle opened fire against the police officers, triggering an exchange of gunfire when the authorities repelled the aggression.

During the operation, the agents managed to detain Miguel Ángel N and Benancio N. A third accomplice managed to escape into the brush, from where he continued shooting at the uniformed officers.

During the pursuit, a police officer was injured by a bullet wound to the leg and was transported to a hospital where he is currently reported to be in stable condition.

The captured individuals were found with a .223 caliber long gun, a .38 special caliber revolver, magazines, live cartridges, and various doses of alleged narcotics.

The detainees and the weaponry were placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the authority that will determine their legal status within the corresponding legal timeframe.
