Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The State Coordination of Civil Protection (COEPROC) reported that heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has caused significant damage in rural communities across the municipalities of Othón P. Blanco and Bacalar. The State Government is collaborating with the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA), the National Guard, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), state and municipal Civil Protection agencies, and the Quintana Roo DIF System, among other state departments, to deliver immediate assistance to affected families.
Severe Rainfall Triggers Emergency Response
The intense precipitation resulted from the movement of Tropical Wave No. 7, interacting with "Tropical Depression Two," leading to substantial rainfall accumulations between June 26 and 28.
According to data from the National Water Commission (Conagua), the highest rainfall totals were recorded in Pucté, with 428.6 mm over three days, followed by Juan Sarabia (286.5 mm) and Sergio Butrón Casas (207 mm). Other affected areas included Agua Blanca (167.8 mm), Nicolás Bravo (151.1 mm), and the Chetumal Observatory (142.1 mm).
Critical Medical Evacuations Conducted
A coordinated effort between the Quintana Roo Health Secretariat, the Government Secretariat, the Citizen Security Secretariat, and IMSS-BIENESTAR successfully executed the air evacuation of a 31-year-old pregnant woman at 39 weeks gestation with high-risk obstetric complications.
The operation transported her from the community of Isidro Fabela in Othón P. Blanco to Chetumal, ensuring her admission to a specialized medical facility before the onset of labor. She is currently under observation at Chetumal General Hospital, where specialists are monitoring her condition and the well-being of her unborn child.
In a separate operation, an 86-year-old man with a serious health condition and mobility impairment was airlifted from a temporary shelter in Álvaro Obregón to Chetumal General Hospital. He was accompanied by family members and received immediate medical attention.
Shelter and Relief Efforts Underway
In Othón P. Blanco, damage has been reported in multiple communities, including Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, Pucté, Álvaro Obregón, Javier Rojo Gómez, Cacao, Sabidos, Cocoyol, Álvaro Obregón Viejo, Nachi Cocom, and González Ortega.
Approximately 80 residents in Pedro Joaquín Coldwell received food aid. Meanwhile, the Moisés Sáenz Garza Secondary School No. 12 in Javier Rojo Gómez was converted into a temporary shelter, housing five adults and three minors. In Álvaro Obregón Nuevo, the Rafael E. Melgar Technical Secondary School No. 12 provided refuge for one individual requiring medical attention.
COEPROC personnel continue conducting field assessments to document affected homes and families, particularly in Pucté and Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, in coordination with military and security authorities.
Authorities Urge Caution
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and adhere to official safety guidelines issued through government channels. The State Government, through COEPROC and in collaboration with federal, state, and municipal agencies, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Quintana Roo families and delivering timely aid to impacted communities.
