Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A spider monkey was struck and killed on Federal Highway 307 near Rancho El Guadalupano, south of Playa del Carmen, on Thursday afternoon. The driver responsible fled the scene, and despite emergency calls to 911, no environmental authorities responded.
Authorities Fail to Respond
According to reports circulating on social media and a video documenting the incident, the driver involved did not stop after hitting the animal. Minutes later, an unidentified individual removed the monkey’s body from the road, though it remains unclear whether they had authorization to do so.
This marks at least the third spider monkey fatality on the same stretch of highway in the past three months. Activists and local residents have repeatedly called for wildlife crossings, improved signage, and public awareness campaigns to prevent further incidents.
The latest fatality has reignited debates over wildlife protection in the region, where urban expansion and inadequate infrastructure have increasingly forced animals out of their natural habitats.
No further details regarding the driver or potential legal action have been released.
