Sinaloa Cartel Leader Arrested in Holbox Amid Extortion Crisis

Security forces patrol Holbox island following the arrest of a Sinaloa Cartel leader

Holbox, Quintana Roo — Authorities have arrested David “N,” alias “El Amaya,” the alleged Sinaloa Cartel plaza boss in Holbox, exposing the criminal extortion network that has besieged this Caribbean tourist destination for months.

The arrest followed several days of coordinated operations between federal, state, and local security forces in response to escalating complaints about drug trafficking, extortion, and protection rackets that residents say had reached critical levels.

Officials seized drugs and 9mm ammunition during the arrest. “El Amaya” is identified as the operator of a criminal structure that expanded its activities on the island through drug distribution networks and systematic extortion of businesses.

The detention occurs amid growing social tension on the island, where residents and workers have openly expressed frustration with violence and lack of sustained results. Social media platforms show residents questioning the effectiveness of security operations and warning about the simultaneous presence of different criminal groups vying for control.

“Don’t let it pass, Holbox belongs to you,” “This won’t end, any group will charge,” and “It’s already an island full of drug traffickers” are among the expressions circulating online.

While the arrest represents a significant blow to the criminal structure operating on the island, experts warn it could lead to a reorganization of criminal cells—a recurring phenomenon in areas with high profitability from protection rackets.

In February, a major operation revealed the growing presence of criminal groups in northern Quintana Roo. At that time, residents used the presence of federal forces to formally denounce systematic extortion against hotels, restaurants, taxi drivers, boat operators, and small businesses.

According to journalistic investigations, this extortion scheme generates millions of pesos monthly in illegal payments, operating through a quota system that affects virtually all economic sectors on the island—from small merchants and nautical service providers to major hotel investments.

This structure has been identified as one of the main factors in local economic decline, alongside tax burdens denounced by business owners.

The capture of “El Amaya” is seen as a delayed but necessary response to social pressure, though doubts persist about the continuity of operations and authorities’ ability to completely dismantle extortion networks.

The arrest of a leader of this caliber comes at a time of maximum tension for Lázaro Cárdenas municipality. While his capture is presumed to advance the dismantling of cells belonging to the “Los Chapitos” faction of the Sinaloa Cartel in northern Quintana Roo, islanders remain cautious.

Experience in other Quintana Roo destinations suggests that after removing a plaza boss, a period of “reorganization” typically follows, often triggering increased local violence.

Authorities have remained tight-lipped about the detainee’s transfer location, though sources indicate he was handed over to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Health, specifically for drug trafficking offenses.

Meanwhile in Holbox, National Guard and Mexican Navy patrols have intensified in beach areas and nightlife centers amid fears of an armed response from remnants of his criminal structure.
