On February 10, 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum led the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the Mexican Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana, FAM) and inaugurated the new Military Air Base No. 20 located at the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport south of Tulum.

During the ceremony, she emphasized the unwavering loyalty of the Armed Forces to Mexico’s Fourth Transformation, a term referring to the current administration’s political and social reform agenda.

President Sheinbaum highlighted that since 2018, Mexico has been undergoing a significant historical transformation, following the eras of Independence, the Reform, and the Revolution. She described this phase as rooted in “Mexican humanism,” aiming for shared prosperity, the well-being of the less privileged, the eradication of classism and racism, and the celebration of Mexico’s rich cultural heritage.

She acknowledged the critical role of the Mexican Armed Forces and the Air Force in this transformative period, stating, “The Mexican Armed Forces and the Mexican Air Force have loyally accompanied the people of Mexico in this phase of our history.” Sheinbaum expressed pride in collaborating with the military, envisioning a future where Mexico is “peaceful, free, independent, sovereign, democratic, and increasingly just.”

General Óscar René Rubio Sánchez, Commander of the Mexican Air Force, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to national security and defense. He pledged continued collaboration with society and various government levels to fulfill their missions with loyalty, honesty, and humanism.

During her address, President Sheinbaum encountered an error in her prepared speech, which mistakenly identified Sonora as the birthplace of Venustiano Carranza and Francisco I. Madero. She promptly corrected it, noting that both leaders were actually from Coahuila. This moment underscored her attention to historical accuracy and the significance of honoring Mexico’s heritage.

The inauguration of Military Air Base No. 20 in Tulum represents a strategic enhancement of Mexico’s defense capabilities, particularly in the southeastern region. This development aligns with the nation’s broader efforts to modernize its military infrastructure and strengthen national security.

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa also attended the event, highlighting the importance of the new air base in bolstering regional security and contributing to the state’s development.

This milestone reflects the Mexican government’s dedication to honoring its military institutions and their pivotal role in the country’s ongoing transformation.
