Cancún, Quintana Roo — President Claudia Sheinbaum inspected construction of the Kukulcán interchange in Cancún, a federal project worth 484 million pesos that will link the Nichupté bridge to Kukulcán Boulevard and is scheduled for completion in late 2026.
Sheinbaum was accompanied by Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Infrastructure, Communications and Transport Secretary Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, who reviewed progress on the project aimed at improving mobility between Cancún’s urban area, the Hotel Zone and Cancún International Airport.
The visit was part of the president’s working tour of Quintana Roo, during which she followed up on federal infrastructure projects. According to information released by the state government, the interchange has reached an advanced stage and is in its final phase of construction, although officials did not specify a completion percentage.
What the project includes
According to the Infrastructure, Communications and Transport Department (SICT), the interchange spans 1.92 kilometers in total, of which roughly 770 meters consist of an elevated structure.
The design includes two independent carriageways — one with two lanes of traffic and another with a single lane running in the opposite direction — along with side roads connecting the interchange to existing streets.
- Foundations, columns, piers, footings, beams, slabs and embankments
- Underground potable water and drainage installations
- Two separate carriageways plus connecting side roads
- Federal investment of 484 million pesos
Who benefits
SICT estimates the project will benefit around 1.32 million residents, in addition to tourists traveling through Cancún, by easing trips to the Hotel Zone and improving connections with the international airport.
Officials also expect the infrastructure to reduce traffic disruptions during peak tourist seasons and provide better circulation options during emergencies in the Hotel Zone.
Formal delivery of the roadway is scheduled for late 2026.
In social media posts, Governor Lezama highlighted the president’s support in moving the project forward and said the interchange is close to completion.
“We thank our president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, for all her support in completing this work that will connect the Nichupté bridge with Kukulcán Boulevard,” Lezama said, adding that it will allow faster and safer travel for residents and visitors.
