Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has demanded an official explanation from the United States government following the closure of airspace over El Paso, Texas, a move that has created new friction in bilateral relations.
The closure comes amid U.S. reports of a significant increase in drone activity along the border, with authorities detecting approximately 150 devices daily crossing from Mexico. U.S. officials have labeled these “narco-drones,” alleging criminal groups use them to transport drugs and monitor Border Patrol movements.
Sheinbaum emphasized that security is a shared priority but requires transparent communication. “The United States must provide an official explanation about what is happening in El Paso,” she stated. “Before speculating, we need clear information to know how to act together.”
The president stressed that border sovereignty and operations require direct dialogue between both nations and questioned the unilateral narrative about the drones. She suggested that before assigning responsibility, it is crucial to share intelligence data to understand the origin and true purpose of these frequent flights.
