Seop Highlights 100 Million Peso Investment in Tulum Infrastructure

Tulum, Quintana Roo — The state Public Works Secretariat (Seop) has allocated 100 million pesos for infrastructure projects in Tulum this year, including the rehabilitation of the Punta Allen highway, construction of sports domes, and pothole repairs, officials announced Wednesday.

Rafael Aradías, head of Seop, said crews are finishing 24 domed sports courts in Tulum as part of a six-year goal to provide covered athletic facilities at all schools in the state.

“Many domes already exist but need maintenance, and that’s what we’re doing,” Aradías said during a public hearing.

The most significant investment is the 29-million-peso rehabilitation of the 21-kilometer Punta Allen highway, which had been neglected for decades. Aradías noted that concrete or asphalt cannot be used on that road, so crews are compacting layers of suitable material.

In Chetumal, Seop launched brigades Wednesday to address sinkholes, alongside pothole repair work expected to last two months in neighborhoods including Fraccionamiento del Mar, Fraccionamiento La Isla, Adolfo López Mateos, Primera Legislatura, Barrio Bravo, Aarón Merino, Centro, and 5 de Abril.

“The water table in parts of Chetumal is very shallow, only a meter deep. Old pipes leak and that causes the sinkholes,” Aradías explained.

For the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, which includes Chetumal, Seop has a 300-million-peso budget this year, adding to the 250 million spent in 2025. It is the second-largest recipient of Seop investment.
