Playa del Carmen Park on Recovered Land Will Preserve Trees, Official Says

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A new dog park being built on a recovered lot in the Villamar 1 neighborhood will preserve all existing trees, municipal trustee Agustín Aguilar confirmed, emphasizing the importance of preventing the site from being appropriated by a private individual and ensuring it benefits local families.

In an interview, Aguilar said the land was reclaimed at the request of parents from a nearby school. The site had been invaded and a house for workers was being built there, with those workers even using the public street as a bathroom next to the school.

“Now it’s our job to keep it clean, because public works are coming for a park,” he said. “All the trees will be preserved. There was only one hollow trunk that was removed for safety, but everything else will stay, for a dog park.”

Debris on the site is already being cleared ahead of construction, he added.

Aguilar said officials will soon tour the area to explain the situation to Villamar 1 residents.

“The most important thing is that a lot that had been taken over by a private individual was recovered and will now be for all families,” he said.

The future park will include a children’s area with synthetic grass, a skating area, a pet area, 12 lights, and walkways.
