Playa del Carmen Police Detain 257 in Crime Crackdown

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Secretary of Citizen Security of Playa del Carmen reported that, with the support of Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, surveillance and crime prevention operations were reinforced between August 1 and September 19.

According to the official report, during this period 257 individuals were taken into custody for crimes including drug offenses, domestic violence, vehicle theft, commercial robbery, property damage, sexual offenses, and traffic incidents.

How the Results Were Achieved

The police department detailed that 1,533 people were detained for administrative infractions, primarily in neighborhoods and tourist zones. Furthermore, with the support of the K9 Canine Unit, more than 174 kilograms of suspected narcotics were seized, including marijuana, crystal meth, crack, cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, and methamphetamines.

The operations also led to the confiscation of 25 compact vehicles, 21 motorcycles, 2 motor-taxis, 2 bicycles, 28 cell phones, as well as firearms, magazines, live ammunition, and bladed weapons.

Importance of the Operations

The Secretary of Citizen Security emphasized that these results reinforce legal certainty and access to justice, as 42 individuals were formally charged. Additionally, 30 people reported in ALBA, AMBER, AZUL, and C5 alerts were located, which strengthens citizen trust in the institutions.

Municipal President Estefanía Mercado reiterated her commitment to maintaining order and peace in the city, underscoring that coordinated work with the community is key to consolidating security in Playa del Carmen.

"The results are a product of the joint effort of the police force and the support of the citizens," stated the Secretary of Citizen Security.
