Cancun, Mexico — A serious traffic accident involving a rollover caused major disruptions in Cancun’s hotel zone Sunday evening, with two drivers injured and traffic backed up for approximately 40 minutes during peak travel time.
The crash occurred around 6 p.m. at kilometer 3.5 of Kukulcan Boulevard, heading toward downtown Cancun. A Jeep Cherokee overturned after colliding with a Kia sedan, ending up on its roof in the left lane near the central median.
Preliminary reports indicate the Jeep driver struck the left rear side of the Kia, lost control, and flipped over. The impact sent the Kia onto the sidewalk near the entrance to Playa Las Perlas.
Municipal Transit officers, Tourist Police, and firefighters responded quickly to the scene. Firefighters assisted one driver who was trapped inside a vehicle, managing to pry open a jammed door without specialized equipment.
Both drivers sustained multiple injuries but refused hospital transport after receiving treatment from private ambulance paramedics at the scene.
The accident caused severe congestion on the downhill lane of Kukulcan Boulevard during Sunday evening’s peak traffic period. This was the second significant crash in the hotel zone that day—earlier Sunday morning, a motorcyclist died after skidding at kilometer 8.5 of the same boulevard.
Municipal Transit officers have begun the process of determining responsibility for the crash. Authorities have not yet released the cause of the accident.
