Tulum, Quintana Roo — Residents and business owners in the La Veleta neighborhood have reported the illegal construction of a terrace encroaching on public space by the owner of the establishment Pizza Pazz, an Italian national. The entrepreneur is accused of obstructing the intersection of 7th Street and 12th Street, severely impeding pedestrian access.

Unauthorized Construction Raises Safety Concerns

According to testimonies gathered, the construction is proceeding without apparent municipal oversight, occupying not only sidewalks but also part of the roadway. This forces pedestrians to walk among vehicles, creating a persistent hazard, particularly at an intersection where safe pedestrian passage should be prioritized.

"This should not be happening—it’s a corner where everyone crosses. Pedestrians have the right of way, but here they’re being forced into the street," said one affected resident, who added that the foreign business owner is conducting the work with the assistance of a construction foreman, with no visible permits displayed.

Broader Urban Disorder in Tulum

Complainants cite this case as further evidence of unchecked urban disorder in Tulum, where some entrepreneurs, both local and foreign, build without adhering to urban development regulations or mobility standards. They argue that inaction by authorities perpetuates such practices, which harm the community.

In response, residents have urgently called on the municipal General Directorate of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development to intervene, review the legality of the construction, and immediately halt any work encroaching on public space. They emphasized that pedestrian priority is established by law and must be respected by all.

The group warned that if no prompt action is taken, they will organize to file formal complaints and bring broader attention to the issue.
