Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The remains of sugarcane leader Evaristo Gómez Díaz and two other individuals, believed to be his escorts, have been discovered in southern Quintana Roo. Gómez Díaz, the head of the Unión Local de Productores de Caña de Azúcar (ULPCA), was found deceased in the community of Sacxán.
Disappearance and Discovery
Gómez Díaz was last seen on May 8, 2025, during a government aid distribution event for the agricultural sector. At the time of the discovery, he was not officially listed as a missing person by the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
This marks the third violent incident involving the sugarcane leader. In February 2022, he was kidnapped by armed assailants in Chetumal while traveling with his son and escorts. He was later released but showed signs of physical abuse.
Previous Attempts on His Life
In October 2024, Gómez Díaz survived an assassination attempt in Carlos A. Madrazo, sustaining injuries to his arm. Despite having federal protection, he and his escorts were ambushed.
Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of death or potential suspects in the latest incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
