Chankanaab Park’s Main Palapa Gets a Major Upgrade

Cozumel, Mexico — Restoration work has commenced on the main palapa at Chankanaab Natural Park, a landmark structure that welcomes thousands of tourists annually. The project aims to enhance the experience for visitors at this key tourist destination.

Infrastructure Improvements Underway

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, Director General of the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), emphasized that this initiative, along with the restoration of the entrance path to the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park, marks the start of a series of efforts to upgrade infrastructure across the foundation’s managed parks.

"These actions reflect our commitment to the conservation and improvement of our tourist spaces, ensuring that upgrades maintain the ecological balance of the natural environment," Alonso Marrufo stated.

The reconstruction of Chankanaab’s central palapa aligns with the vision of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, who seeks to translate the state’s tourism success into broader benefits for all, as outlined in the New Agreement for Wellbeing and Development of Quintana Roo.

"We will continue working to ensure tourism becomes an engine for shared prosperity," Alonso added.

Scope and Timeline of the Project

The restoration includes structural and aesthetic enhancements designed to preserve the park’s natural surroundings. Work is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, allowing visitors to enjoy a renewed and welcoming space.
