Nautical Sector Breakthrough: Progress in ‘El Meco’ Conservation Unveiled!

Two years ago, in 2023, the Nautical Associates of Quintana Roo (ANQ) made history by securing the first-ever permit to operate in the "El Meco" region of Puerto Juarez. Since then, the Association has made significant strides in various areas, according to its director, Ricardo Mulerio López.

The ANQ has introduced two vessels, each with their own park rangers, and established a partnership with the Red Cross Cancun delegation. This partnership allows for an ambulance, staffed by two paramedics, to be available for 8 hours each day. The Association also consistently monitors the ecosystem's biological status and has installed a total of 21 artificial habitats.

"These habitats, grouped into three modules, have yielded fantastic results," said López. "Living coral grafts within these habitats have significantly boosted the growth and development of marine fauna. We're making great progress with this project."

The ANQ plans to continue introducing artificial habitats in 'El Meco' to further stimulate the growth of marine flora and fauna. López also mentioned the possibility of creating a coral nursery aimed at populating the designated areas within 'El Meco' with coral.

However, there is no set date for the removal of sunken vessels in the Nichupté Lagoon System, where an estimated 50 vessels are currently submerged. López explained that the Regional Port Captaincy in Puerto Juárez has begun the legal process to dispose of these vessels and hopes to complete this task within the next six months.
