Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The State Transit Directorate has confirmed that starting April 1, it will implement a permanent operation to sanction vehicles circulating with irregular window tinting or without proper permits, announced the agency’s head, Efraín García Chávez. He specified that the first quarter of the year will be considered a voluntary regularization period.
“During January, February, and March, drivers must obtain the corresponding permit or remove unauthorized window tinting,” said García Chávez.
He made clear that once the grace period concludes, any vehicle failing to comply with regulations will be fined, without exceptions.
According to the Transit Directorate, excessive window tinting hinders the identification of drivers and occupants, limits visibility to the outside, and has been used to facilitate crimes and escapes after traffic incidents, which is why control over this type of modification will be reinstated.
Sanctions will be applied in accordance with the State Mobility Law and the Municipal Traffic Regulations, although authorities have not yet detailed the fine amount, raising doubts among motorists.
The director acknowledged that currently, verification of window tinting is practically obsolete and that many vehicles circulate with fake, expired, or simply unauthorized permits, which is why administrative and operational control is being reestablished.
To obtain a window tinting permit, it is necessary to go to the offices of the State Transit Directorate and present the following documents:
- Copy of voter ID
- Copy of valid driver’s license
- Copy of valid vehicle registration
- Proof of address valid for no more than three months
- Authorized permit for smoke 1 or smoke 2 tinting
- Payment for the tinting permit
The permit costs 950 pesos, but the document must be renewed each calendar year, not fiscal year, meaning the permit is not for a full year but rather valid from the date of issuance until December of the current year.
An important detail is that the fine for not having the permit is up to 870 pesos.
