CANCÚN — The Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility (Imoveqroo) will conduct a Citizen Consultation on Mobility this Sunday, focusing on a comprehensive improvement of the public transportation service, which could involve updating fares that have remained unchanged for eight years.
The consultation will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with 48 ballot boxes distributed across several municipalities in the state.
The last fare update in Cancún occurred in February 2017. According to a technical study conducted by Imoveqroo, the estimated real cost to move one person on public transport is between 21 and 24 pesos. The current fare is 10 pesos within the city and 12 pesos in the hotel zone.
The director of Imoveqroo, Rafael Hernández Kotasek, explained that before defining any increase in the fare price, user participation is necessary. Citizens will be able to voice their opinion on whether they would accept a higher fare in exchange for modern units, greater coverage, and shorter wait times.
“We want to ask people if they would be willing to accept a fare update, but with a legal commitment from the concession holders to improve the service. It is not just about the price, but the real cost of the trip,” he stated.
However, the official emphasized that any modification will depend on both the results of the consultation and the fulfillment of new operational conditions by the concession holders.
To participate, individuals must present a valid INE (Voter ID) or driver's license. Participants aged 16 and 17 must present a valid school ID card.
