Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced that the summer electricity subsidy is now active in Quintana Roo and will remain in effect through October 31, providing relief to thousands of households facing increased energy consumption during the hottest months.
The governor made the announcement during her citizen engagement program “La Voz del Pueblo,” where she addresses public concerns and provides updates on social issues. She clarified that contrary to some speculation, the subsidy has not been canceled and is already being applied to residential users across the state.
The subsidy automatically applies to residential customers with CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) tariffs 1A through 1F, reducing electricity costs on monthly bills. In Quintana Roo, where average temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius, the use of fans, refrigerators, and air conditioning systems significantly increases energy consumption during summer months.
Lezama explained that the subsidy aims to offset higher electricity usage due to heat, preventing families from facing excessive bills. The discount appears on CFE bills under the “government support” line item, showing both the subsidized amount and total consumption.
The program represents an investment exceeding 87 million pesos, providing substantial support for household economies in the state. However, the governor urged residents to maintain responsible energy use despite the subsidy.
Holy Week Tourism Preparations
During the same program, officials discussed preparations for Holy Week, when Quintana Roo expects to receive over 1.2 million tourists. Lezama invited both residents and visitors to enjoy the state’s 12 tourist destinations, particularly the Mexican Caribbean, one of the country’s main tourism hubs.
She emphasized safety precautions to prevent accidents and ensure secure vacations. The state government has deployed a special operation with more than 9,000 security and emergency personnel, including federal agencies, Civil Protection, Red Cross, firefighters, and rescue teams.
Authorities issued several recommendations for tourists and residents:
- Avoid driving while fatigued or under the influence of alcohol
- Respect vehicle occupancy limits and use seat belts
- Follow lifeguard instructions at beaches, especially when red flags are posted
- Supervise children at beaches and pools at all times
- Exercise caution with gas, hazardous substances, and electrical appliances at home
Officials also advised against entering the sea during risky conditions, avoiding diving in cenotes, and respecting beach monitoring hours.
