Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo — Sugar cane producers in southern Quintana Roo called for immediate support from state and federal governments on Monday, citing devastating losses caused by the Fusarium fungus. The outbreak has affected over 17,000 hectares, resulting in economic damages exceeding 800 million pesos.
Led by the National Confederation of Rural Producers (CNPR), the growers announced plans for a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday, June 24, at 10:00 a.m. outside the Government Palace to deliver a formal petition. They warned that if their demands are not met, they may escalate protests, including road blockades.
A Call for Immediate Aid
Benjamin Gutiérrez, a leader of the sugar cane growers, outlined the petition’s key requests: financial aid of 7,000 pesos per hectare, 500 kilograms of fertilizer, phytosanitary treatments, foliar nutrient packages, and pest control measures, including rodent management.
The sugar cane sector is the second-largest economic driver in Quintana Roo, trailing only tourism. Without intervention, the crisis threatens to worsen the financial instability of thousands of families dependent on the industry.
Producers urged dialogue but emphasized that continued institutional neglect would force them to intensify protests to highlight the severity of the situation.
