Quintana Roo Schools Receive Measles Protocol Training Amid Outbreak

Training session for school officials on measles prevention protocols in Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — School administrators, teachers, and parent representatives in Quintana Roo received training on measles prevention protocols Thursday night, following a state education department order to implement safety measures in schools.

The training, conducted via Zoom by health officials, covered information about the disease, transmission methods, symptoms, and the importance of vaccination for vulnerable age groups from zero to 49 years.

Cecilia Manzanilla Pérez, leader of the State Association of Parents and Families, said the session explained the protocols schools should implement, which include:

  • Health screening filters
  • Symptom detection
  • Vaccination recommendations
  • Review of vaccination records
  • Notification of parents in suspected cases
  • Reporting to public health authorities in suspected cases
  • Removal of students if infection is confirmed

Manzanilla Pérez noted that reviewing vaccination records is not mandatory but recommended for parents who wish to verify their children have measles vaccinations or complete immunization schedules.

While parents decide whether to withdraw children from school in suspected cases, removal becomes mandatory if infection is confirmed.

Quintana Roo has recorded 39 measles cases this year through February 19, with no deaths reported. In 2025, the state confirmed only two cases.

The State Education Department (SEQ) ordered nearly 2,000 schools serving approximately 334,000 basic education students to implement preventive protocols against measles before February 12.
