Riviera Maya, QR — Prisoners in Quintana Roo are participating in social reintegration through various planned programs. The Quintana Roo State Secretariat of Security (SSC) says they are strengthening social reintegration efforts in penitentiary centers through the implementation of these programs.

Fourteen social reintegration programs called “Impulso y Unidos para Transformar” (Impulse and United to Transform) are being carried out for incarcerated individuals in the penitentiary centers of Chetumal and Cancún. Each program will last three months.

The Secretariat of Social Welfare, social organizations, and other actors are also participating in the project, in coordination with the Undersecretary of the State Penitentiary System.

These courses fulfill three pillars of social reintegration: work, job training, and sports. A total of 1,800 incarcerated individuals are being held under judicial order in the state penitentiary centers of Quintana Roo.

The highlighted initiatives for participating incarcerated men and women include pastry making, tailoring and clothing manufacturing, English classes, and emotional and psychological learning.

Projects such as “Mujeres Resilientes en Prisión y Construyendo Masculinidades Positivas” (Resilient Women in Prison and Building Positive Masculinities) are also being implemented, promoting reflection and personal transformation. Likewise, the program “Arte, Cultura, Deporte y Canto” (Art, Culture, Sports, and Singing) uses artistic, cultural, and sports expressions as tools for social transformation, fostering values, human rights, and new forms of peaceful coexistence.

The workshop “Voces Entre Muros” (Voices Between Walls) is also offered, dedicated to providing legal and criminal information, allowing incarcerated individuals to know their rights, better understand their legal process, and strengthen their confidence in the justice system as a path toward reintegration.

Additionally, carpentry, pastry making, hairdressing, and gardening workshops will open new learning and work opportunities, strengthening reintegration through daily practice.

Rear Admiral Julio César Gómez Torres said: “This project reflects the conviction that citizen security is strengthened not only through surveillance and discipline, but also through development opportunities, training, and comprehensive support. Social reintegration is a constitutional mandate and an ethical commitment that we assume with responsibility and vision for the future.”

The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) states that its ongoing work in restoring the fundamental rights of incarcerated individuals for their effective reintegration into society will also strengthen the construction of peace in Quintana Roo.
