Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Tax Administration Service (SATQ) and the Secretariat of Finance and Planning (Sefiplan) will begin analyzing the requirements for the 2026 license plate renewal process in August, as part of compliance with federal regulations set by the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation.
Planning Phase to Begin in August
Héctor Contreras Mercader, director of SATQ in Quintana Roo, confirmed that between August and September, authorities will assess the logistical and budgetary needs for the statewide plate replacement initiative. This includes determining the number of new plates and registration cards required, as well as the associated costs.
Currently, the state has 650,000 registered vehicles, but only 433,000 have renewed their registration. Contreras Mercader urged vehicle owners to update their documentation in 2025 to avoid additional fees, emphasizing a 40% discount available this year and a 70% discount during public hearings.
Costs and Incentives
The price for the 2026 plate renewal has not yet been finalized, as it must be included in the state’s Revenue Law and approved by the Quintana Roo Congress. However, the 2023 renewal fees provide a reference:
- Cars, trucks, and buses: 1,400 pesos plus a 130-peso registration card.
- Motorcycles: 467 pesos plus a 130-peso registration card.
- Trailers: 648 pesos plus a 130-peso registration card.
In 2023, vehicle owners who renewed their plates between January and March received a 100% discount on the vehicle tax and a complimentary auto insurance policy.
Next Steps
Once the planning phase concludes, the state will launch a public bidding process for the production and distribution of the new plates. Contreras Mercader reiterated that the renewal is mandated every three years under federal law and stressed the importance of compliance to maintain subsidies, including the vehicle tax waiver offered in the first quarter of the year.
The final cost and implementation details will be announced after the budgetary review and legislative approval.
