Quintana Roo Pauses Taxi Fare Increases for Two Years

Rafael Hernández Kotasek, director of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The director of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo), Rafael Hernández Kotasek, has provided relief to strained family budgets by stating that taxi fares will not see increases in the short term. The hikes will only be considered once the Mobility of Well-being (Mobi) system is consolidated, mirroring the gradual process planned for urban transport, which could take up to two years.

Hernández Kotasek indicated that fare increase requests from state unions could be analyzed during the first half of 2026, but any adjustments would be implemented gradually. This approach will consider the specific dynamics of each municipality and the progress in modernizing urban transport in major cities.

Conditions in Chetumal and Cancún

In Chetumal, which lacks urban transport, the official explained that this new option for users must first be consolidated before analyzing taxi fare increases. Implementing hikes beforehand would impose a high cost on citizens who have no alternative public transportation.

In Cancún, he conditioned approval on prior improvements to taxi units to better adapt to the needs of both residents and tourists.

Agreements and Timeline

Hernández Kotasek assured that agreements have already been reached with unions and concessionaire partners to apply increases gradually across the state. This process could extend over two years until all municipalities are included.

New Transport Route and Electric Units

Additionally, the head of Imoveqroo announced that the new Calzada Veracruz route will begin operations on December 15. It will join the Caribe and Sian Ka’an-Américas routes in rebuilding the public transport service, which had been suspended for 14 years.

Hernández Kotasek also confirmed that the first electric units manufactured in Mexico will arrive by the end of January to be integrated into the service.

According to information from the institute, the Calzada Veracruz route will directly benefit 35,656 people by connecting 29 neighborhoods with 12,922 homes, 45 schools, and over 2,100 businesses. The service promises to be more accessible and reliable for students, workers, women, people with disabilities, and older adults.

Current Operations and Future Plans

He noted that the Caribe and Sian Ka’an-Américas routes currently operate with a daily average of 2,000 users, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. However, extensions to operating hours, free transport days, and special facilities to support families during the holiday season are under consideration.

It is worth mentioning that Imoveqroo has already begun pilot test runs for the new route to verify the layout, timing, stops, and installed infrastructure. These tests aim to fine-tune frequencies, pick-up and drop-off points, and make final adjustments before the route launches on December 15.
