Quintana Roo Translates Laws into Maya for Justice Access

Government officials presenting translated Maya language legal documents in Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — As part of its public policy aimed at guaranteeing full access to justice and respect for the human rights of indigenous peoples, the Government of Quintana Roo, through the Secretariat of Government, has received the translation into the Maya language of three fundamental regulatory instruments.

Cristina Torres, Secretary of Government, explained that within the framework of the collaboration agreement signed with higher education institutions such as the Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo (UIMQROO), this legal instrument in the Maya language was achieved, which guarantees the rights of people from indigenous communities.

The Secretary of Government received from the hands of UIMQROO Rector William Briceño Guzmán the translation of the Law for Consultation with Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities of the State of Quintana Roo, the Sustainable Rural Development Law of the State of Quintana Roo, and the Penal Code of the State of Quintana Roo.

She detailed that the translation of these legal ordinances represents a significant advance in promoting equality, preserving the Maya language, and strengthening access to legal information, by allowing Maya speakers to clearly understand their rights and obligations.

These actions are part of the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo promoted by Governor Mara Lezama, which prioritizes social justice, respect for cultural diversity, and the full recognition of indigenous peoples, with a humanistic and inclusive vision, the Governor emphasized.

With this inter-institutional effort, the Government of Quintana Roo reaffirms its commitment to building a more just and inclusive state, where access to justice, protection of human rights, and preservation of indigenous languages are pillars of shared well-being and development with a human face.
