Quintana Roo Leads Mexico in Sunburn Cases as Heat Wave Intensifies

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo has recorded the highest number of sunburn cases in Mexico this season, with seven of the 54 cases reported nationwide, according to health officials. That represents 12.9% of the national total.

The state has reported 40 heat-related illnesses overall, accounting for more than 30% of cases in the Yucatan Peninsula. Authorities have urged residents to take preventive measures after a 25% increase in heat-related conditions over the past week.

The National Meteorological Service, through the National Water Commission (Conagua), forecasts maximum temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees Celsius (95-104°F) for Quintana Roo and the rest of southeastern Mexico. The most intense heat wave, with temperatures up to 45°C (113°F), continues to affect northwestern states, particularly Baja California and Sonora.

Dr. Mitzi Marisol Lugo Castillo, coordinator of Health Education and Research at IMSS Family Medicine Unit No. 16, explained that heat stroke can occur not only from direct sun exposure but also from staying in enclosed or hot environments such as vehicles, or from intense physical activity. These conditions raise body temperature and constitute a medical emergency.

Key recommendations to reduce risks include staying hydrated, consuming oral electrolytes when necessary, wearing light-colored clothing, avoiding outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and paying special attention to children, older adults, and people with chronic diseases.

During the 2026 heat season, the Yucatan Peninsula has accumulated 119 affected individuals and four deaths related to high temperatures.

In Quintana Roo, authorities have recorded 25 cases of heat stroke, eight cases of dehydration, and seven sunburns, for a total of 40 heat-related illnesses. That figure represents 3.4% of the national total.
