Governor Mara Lezama presenting the Barrio Mágico project in Chetumal, Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama has unveiled plans for Mexico’s first “Barrio Mágico” in the state capital, a cultural revitalization project aimed at restoring Chetumal’s historic identity and boosting tourism.

The governor presented the initiative’s first phase to residents and officials during a meeting at the “Cuna del Mestizaje” hall in the state government palace. The project focuses on rescuing both tangible and intangible historical heritage through coordinated efforts between the government and civil society.

Historic Preservation and Urban Renewal

The program will center on Chetumal’s historic downtown area, with interventions designed to revitalize public spaces and strengthen residents’ sense of belonging. One distinctive feature will be the recreation of traditional Chetumal homes with Anglo-Caribbean architectural influences, reflecting the region’s unique identity.

Authorities plan to implement the project in stages as part of a comprehensive strategy to restore the city’s historical value and cultural appeal.

Cultural and Economic Development

Beyond urban renewal, the initiative will integrate gastronomic, cultural, and artistic experiences while beautifying public spaces to attract visitors and stimulate the local economy. Governor Lezama emphasized that this will be the country’s first Barrio Mágico, positioning Chetumal as a pioneer in cultural identity and tourism initiatives.

Collaborative Approach

Lezama stressed the importance of coordinated decision-making between authorities and civil society for the city’s development. The meeting included state officials such as Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto, Territorial and Urban Development Secretary José Alberto Alonso Ovando, Institute of Culture and Arts Director Lillian Villanueva, Chief Administrative Officer José Adrián Díaz Villanueva, and Deputy Government Secretary Nabil Eljure Terrazas.

Representatives from Chetumal’s founding families and other social stakeholders also attended the presentation.

The state government aims to establish Chetumal as a cultural destination through this project, strengthening local identity and creating new economic opportunities through tourism. Officials described the Barrio Mágico as a key component in helping the capital regain its historical, cultural, and social prominence.
