Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Secretary of Agriculture of the Mexican government and the state of Quintana Roo have signed the Coordination Agreement for Sustainable Rural Development, outlining measures to be implemented between 2025 and 2027 to improve the well-being of local producers.
The agreement was formalized by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Enrique Morales Pardo, head of the Office of Representation of the Secretary of Agriculture in Quintana Roo, during a ceremony held at the agency’s facilities.
Strengthening Agricultural Production and Combating Hunger
Governor Lezama emphasized that the agreement will promote agricultural production and initiatives to address food insecurity.
“This is part of building the second phase of the Fourth Transformation, where no one, absolutely no one, is left behind or excluded,” stated Lezama, who was accompanied by Jorge Carlos Aguilar Osorio, head of SEDARPE (the state’s agriculture department).
Historic Investment in Hydroagricultural Infrastructure
A record investment of 119 million 938 thousand pesos has been allocated to rehabilitate and modernize hydroagricultural infrastructure in the state. Governor Lezama and Erika Ramírez Méndez, local director of CONAGUA (National Water Commission), led the distribution of support at an event held in Parque Quintana Roo.
The initiative is a joint effort between CONAGUA, the state government, and 2,270 agricultural users, benefiting over 55,950 hectares of farmland. The funding breakdown includes:
- 59.9 million pesos from federal sources
- 29.9 million pesos from state funds
- 29.9 million pesos contributed by producers
The investment aims to enhance agricultural efficiency, ensure effective water use, and strengthen the food supply chain. It will support Irrigation Districts, Technified Rainfed Agriculture, and Irrigation Units.
Additionally, farmers will receive technical assistance, equipment for irrigation wells, system rehabilitation, drainage improvements, harvest access roads, and agricultural land structures.
The agreement underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable development and equitable growth for rural communities.
