Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Food Bank of Quintana Roo, in collaboration with Cáritas, provides critical assistance to 15,000 individuals monthly, with plans to expand its reach through new campaigns and community partnerships.

Rescuing Food, Nourishing Communities

In 2024, the organization successfully recovered two million kilograms of food across the state that would otherwise have gone to waste. These resources were redirected to underserved communities, offering vital nutritional support. Miguel Gutiérrez Pacheco, Director of Cáritas and the Food Bank of Quintana Roo, emphasized the broader impact of Mexico’s 55 food banks in addressing food insecurity among vulnerable populations.

A socio-nutritional study ensures fair and equitable distribution. "That’s why we’re committed to expanding awareness of this effort and maintaining close ties with universities, associations, and the general public," Gutiérrez Pacheco stated.

Strengthening Alliances for Greater Impact

The Food Bank is preparing to launch a major marketing campaign in partnership with the Sustainability Council of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association. The initiative aims to encourage broader public participation in food rescue efforts.

Supermarkets, hotels, and individual donors are among the primary contributors. When asked whether community kitchens are part of their model, Gutiérrez Pacheco clarified, "No, the focus is linking rescued food with institutions serving vulnerable groups. While establishing community kitchens is challenging, we are actively working toward that goal."

Direct Aid Through Social Outreach

A dedicated social work team conducts assessments to identify families in greatest need, ensuring donations reach those most in distress. The Food Bank sources supplies from supermarkets, grocery stores, manufacturers, farmers, hotels, and individual donors, supplemented by community-driven collection drives.

Efforts continue to broaden the program’s reach, reinforcing its mission to combat hunger and reduce food waste across Quintana Roo.
