Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Education Department (SEQ) announced on Thursday that it will no longer require entrance exams for admission to public high schools in the state for the 2026-2027 school year.
In a brief statement dated Wednesday but published Thursday, the state agency said the measure applies to all students seeking to enroll in public high schools in Quintana Roo. The SEQ clarified that pre-registrations currently being conducted by some institutions are not official and do not guarantee a spot in high schools.
The department urged parents and students to stay informed through official government channels.
According to authorities, the move aims to ensure a place for all young people, unify the educational model, and end exclusion. This decision is part of the New National High School Education Model.
Although this scheme began as a pilot program in the 2025-2026 period, it has now been fully eliminated, meaning no student will take this admission exam for the 2026-2027 school year.
Eliminating this evaluation has sparked controversy elsewhere in Mexico, with critics arguing it could be counterproductive for student profiles and may reduce educational quality.
