Quintana Roo Connects 4,500 Private Cameras to State Surveillance Network

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The state has integrated about 4,500 privately owned security cameras into its C5 surveillance system, according to Public Security Secretary Julio César Gómez Torres, who said the move reflects growing public trust in law enforcement.

Gómez Torres said the number of illegal cameras installed by criminal groups has declined as the state expands its own network. Chetumal now has 516 cameras, with plans to add 200 more in the second half of the year, aiming for at least 816 in the capital. Another 3,780 cameras are deployed across the rest of Quintana Roo.

All cameras are operational, Gómez Torres said, and footage helps solve about 80% of crimes by providing evidence to the State Prosecutor’s Office for identifying and locating suspects.

“Criminal groups are evolving their methods, but they know we have a permanent program to identify their tactics,” he said.

The Public Security Department has held meetings with residents and business owners to encourage them to join the Guardianes 911 program and link their cameras to the C5. Gómez Torres said the response has been positive.

“This shows citizens trust institutions to strengthen surveillance capacity. In total, we monitor more than 10,000 cameras, giving us more eyes on the street to prevent crime,” he said.
