Rural Families Struggle to Afford Clean Water in Mexico

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — The rising cost of purified water has made it unaffordable for many families in rural communities, with prices for 20-liter jugs reaching 40 pesos, according to residents. The issue is particularly acute in areas without automated water dispensers, forcing some households to rely on tap water despite health risks.

Rising Costs and Limited Access

Edilberto, a resident of the Tabi community, reported that while large water companies charge 40 pesos per jug, local purification plants offer the same product for 17 to 20 pesos. However, traveling to urban centers to purchase cheaper water is not feasible for all rural families.

Health officials warn that consuming untreated tap water increases the risk of gastrointestinal, dermatological, and respiratory illnesses. Despite these dangers, the lack of affordable alternatives leaves many with no choice.

Water Shortages Worsen in Urban Areas

In Felipe Carrillo Puerto’s municipal seat, over 15 neighborhoods face daily water shortages due to low pressure. Martina, a resident of the Leona Vicario neighborhood, described the situation in Mayan: "Mina’an ja’" (there is no water).

Manuel, from the Constituyentes neighborhood, suggested installing pumps and storage tanks to alleviate the pressure issues. However, the high cost of such solutions puts them out of reach for most families.

The growing population has strained the local water infrastructure, managed by the Potable Water and Sewerage Commission. While water trucks provide temporary relief, demand often exceeds supply.

The situation highlights the urgent need for expanded and improved water services in both rural and urban areas of the region.
