Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Punta Sur on Isla Mujeres is being highlighted as one of the premier locations in Mexico to observe the Spring Equinox in 2026, offering a distinctive experience compared to traditional archaeological sites.

The equinox will occur at 8:46 a.m. on March 20, 2026. This astronomical event, happening only twice a year, results in nearly equal lengths of day and night across the planet.

Quintana Roo is often among the first Mexican states to witness the equinox due to its eastern location. While visual phenomena can be observed at various structures and archaeological zones across the state, Punta Sur provides a unique setting.

Unlike the experience at pyramids or other ruins, Punta Sur offers an exclusive view of the alignment with the Temple of Ixchel, whose remnants sit atop the cliff. Visitors can watch the sun rise from the sea, creating a golden aura visible only from this spot.

The location also allows observers to see the multiple colors formed at dawn. Isla Mujeres is recognized as the first place in Mexico to receive the sun’s rays, making the event there particularly notable.

How to Reach Punta Sur

For visitors on Isla Mujeres who wish to see the equinox from Punta Sur, there are several transportation options:

  • Taxi
  • Golf cart
  • Walking (the distance is not considered very far)

Due to the early hour of the event, taking a taxi or private vehicle is recommended.

The route to Punta Sur is as follows:

  1. Take Avenida Rueda Medina.
  2. Drive along that avenue until reaching Perimetral Pte.
  3. Take Perimetral Pte. to the sculpture of the Goddess Ixchel.
