Puerto Morelos Fishing Tournament Offers 170K Pesos in Prizes

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The coastal town of Puerto Morelos will host the Día de la Marina Fishing Tournament on Saturday, May 31, offering a total prize pool of 170,000 pesos. The event aims to revive local traditions while stimulating the regional economy through sports tourism.

Economic Boost and Community Focus

Municipal President Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz emphasized the tournament’s role in supporting Puerto Morelos’s identity and economy. “Puerto Morelos has everything needed to host these events. We want the economic benefits to directly reach the town’s residents,” she stated.

Organized with backing from local authorities, businesses, and the community, the competition expects 35 to 45 participating vessels, drawing anglers from across the Mexican Caribbean. So far, 14 teams have registered, with more anticipated due to promotions at neighboring tournaments in Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen.

Prize Structure and Event Details

The tournament will distribute prizes as follows:

  • 1st place: 100,000 pesos
  • 2nd place: 50,000 pesos
  • 3rd place: 20,000 pesos

Fishing begins at 8:00 AM, with awards presented at 5:00 PM. A parallel Artisan Pavilion in the Casco Antiguo park will showcase local crafts, ensuring revenue stays within the community. The municipal government clarified it will not operate any services to prioritize citizen earnings.

Registration and Competition Rules

Participants can register for 3,000 pesos by:

Gamaliel Ek, tournament judge and representative of Pescando en el Caribe, confirmed winners will be judged by fish type, weight, and release practices. He highlighted the event’s dual purpose: fostering family-friendly recreation and promoting sportfishing.

The tournament underscores Puerto Morelos’s appeal as a destination for anglers and tourists alike, reinforcing its cultural and economic revitalization efforts.
