Cancún, Mexico — The Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has invited the general public to participate in an informational meeting regarding the Cancún Multimodal Terminal, a cargo service facility for the Maya Train project. The event will take place on Thursday, July 10, at the Kuchil Baxal Gymnasium in Cancún, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Project Details and Environmental Concerns

The Cancún Multimodal Terminal is one of four such facilities under construction this year. It will include:

  • A hazardous waste storage area
  • Housing for the National Guard and crew members
  • A Tetra antenna
  • Space for a customs building or fiscalized enclosure
  • A weighbridge
  • Public warehouse facilities
  • Vehicle and pedestrian access booths
  • Elevated railway control and surveillance booths
  • A water tank, pump room, and cistern

Additional features consist of:

  • Locker rooms for security personnel
  • Transformer and electrical station rooms

However, the project requires a land-use change affecting 259.59 hectares of medium subperennial jungle. Of this area, 259.03 hectares are covered by trees up to 30 meters tall, which will need to be cleared, according to the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) made available to the public as part of the consultation process that began on June 9.

Purpose of the Meeting

The July 10 meeting is part of the broader public consultation process. Its objectives include:

  • Allowing Tren Maya S.A. de C.V. to present the project’s environmental technical aspects, potential impacts, and proposed mitigation measures in person.
  • Providing an opportunity for representatives of Tren Maya S.A. de C.V. to address questions and concerns regarding legal and environmental technical matters.
  • Enabling Semarnat, through the General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk (DGIRA), to receive and document observations and proposals from attendees.
