Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Residents of the Bali and La Joya subdivisions staged a protest on Friday morning in front of the Municipal Palace, demanding authorities intervene and put an immediate stop to clandestine burns that they assert have been causing health problems for over a year.

The protesters noted that the situation has persisted since 2024, with successive municipal governments failing to provide a solution. They stated that during the administration of Lili Campos Miranda, the issue was ignored under the pretext of being in a transition period, and they have not received the expected response from the current government either.

During the protest, residents also denounced a housing developer in Corasol for allegedly dumping construction debris at a clandestine dump site, further aggravating pollution in the area.

They warned that if no concrete actions are taken, they will undertake more drastic measures, such as blocking the Playa del Carmen boulevard, as they believe the authorities have only placed obstacles in their path. They even mentioned that instead of addressing the complaints, drones have been deployed to monitor the burns, despite citizens lacking the technology to detect the times when these burns occur.
